PCOS: A Naturopathic Approach to Hormonal Balance and Well-being

I felt inspired to write this article because as a supervisor at one of Australia's largest naturopathic colleges, I've observed a significant increase in the number of females and assigned female at birth (AFAB) individuals seeking support and treatment for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in our clinic each week to be ever increasing.

Is PCOS More Prevalent, or Is It Being Diagnosed More Widely?

Increased awareness among healthcare professionals, improved diagnostic criteria, and advancements in medical technology have contributed to the rise in PCOS diagnoses. Additionally, societal factors such as changes in diet, lifestyle, and environmental exposures may also play a role. While PCOS has always been present, the increased recognition and understanding of the condition have led to more accurate identification and diagnosis in recent years.

PCOS is a prevalent hormonal disorder affecting millions of women worldwide. Characterised by hormonal imbalances, irregular menstrual cycles, and ovarian cysts, PCOS can have significant impacts on a their health and quality of life. However, with a holistic approach rooted in naturopathic principles, women with PCOS can find support in managing their symptoms and promoting overall well-being.

PCOS is a complex condition with multifaceted origins, involving genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Key features include insulin resistance, elevated androgens (such as testosterone hormones), and disrupted menstrual cycles. These imbalances can lead to a range of symptoms, including irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, acne, hirsutism (excessive hair growth), and mood disturbances.

A Naturopathic Approach to PCOS

Naturopathic medicine offers a comprehensive approach to managing PCOS that focuses on addressing the underlying imbalances contributing to the condition. By addressing root causes and supporting the body's innate healing processes, naturopathic treatments aim to restore hormonal balance and promote overall health and vitality.

Nutrition for PCOS

A cornerstone of naturopathic treatment for PCOS is optimising nutrition. A balanced diet rich in whole foods, fibre, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help stabilise blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and support hormonal balance. Emphasising low-glycemic index foods and reducing intake of processed sugars and refined carbohydrates can be particularly beneficial for managing insulin resistance associated with PCOS.

Herbal Medicine for PCOS

Herbal medicine offers a wealth of botanical remedies that can help regulate menstrual cycles, reduce androgen levels, and support ovarian function in women with PCOS. Herbs such as Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree), Cimicifuga racemosa (Black Cohosh), and Paeonia lactiflora (Peony) have traditionally been used to promote hormonal balance and regulate menstrual cycles.

Lifestyle Modifications for PCOS

In addition to dietary changes and herbal supplements, lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in managing PCOS. Regular physical activity, stress management techniques such as yoga and meditation, adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight can all help improve insulin sensitivity, reduce androgen levels, and alleviate PCOS symptoms.

Nutritional Supplements for PCOS

Certain nutritional supplements can complement diet and lifestyle interventions and can in-fact help to support mood and energy to be able to support and sustain change. Supplements such as inositol, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and chromium picolinate have shown promise in improving insulin sensitivity, regulating menstrual cycles, and reducing symptoms.
